Talisman - IO Audit Drilling and Wells

Talisman Energy Inc. is an independent upstream oil and gas company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Talisman has operations in Canada and its subsidiaries operate in the UK, Norway, Southeast Asia, North Africa and the United States. Talisman’s subsidiaries are also active in a number of other international areas.

Business Challenge
Drilling and wells (D&W) in Talisman Energy Norway wanted to investigate the potential benefits from Integrated Operations. An exciting portfolio of production and exploration drilling combined with hired rigs from different companies and a vision towards growth required standardization and predictability.

D&W objectives with the project:

  • Define Talisman’s ambitions with Integrated Operations and road map to implementation
  • Identify work processes that better support the offshore organization and that allow "offshore" tasks to be performed onshore

Identify means to improve utilization of technology and systems to better integrate offshore and onshore operation

Propose efforts to improve cross departmental integration

In commercial terms:

  • Reduce costs of drilling operations
  • Reduction of NPT (Non Production Time)
  • Improve supply chain management

Solution
ODT IO consulting was engaged to do an IO audit: an AS-IS analysis stating the IO status in the organization, suggesting efforts of improvement and a roadmap for implementation. In addition, ODT IO Consulting worked with D&W to create an overall IO strategy based on the company’s profile and strategy.

Deliverable
Report from the AS-IS proposing eight different projects of varying size and complexity. All the projects were approved and based on priority and resource availability four were started immediately. The remaining four projects will be started subsequently, based on capacity and ongoing progress.

Benefits
By doing the pre-study, Talisman D&W have highlighted their ambitions with IO and created a strategy that will guide all their IO efforts.

The report contains a road map to implementation with suggested projects and efforts. The expected benefits from the projects already initiated are:

  • Minimized vulnerability through the utilization of existing data systems
  • Secured standardization through comprehensive IO based work processes
  • Increased efficiency through real time operation in data systems
  • Improved integration internally/ externally through integrated work processes and IO stimulating contracts
  • Identified strategy (needs, requirements, and process ownership) to improve utilization of technology

Conclusion
ODT-IO undertook an AS-IS IO analysis of Drilling and Wells work processes, systems, and support processes. The AS-IS study yielded a number of short-, medium-, and long-term recommendations for further study and/or implementation by Talisman. An indicative roadmap and implementation plan was provided. ODT-IO is continuing its cooperation with Talisman Energy Norge to assist in implementing selected measures identified.

The projects and other efforts initiated within Integrated Operations in Talisman D&W is certain to assist in reaching strategic goals and deliver solid results in the coming years.
