Odfjell Drilling - Operational model for platform drilling

Odfjell Drilling is a leading drilling, technology and well service company in the North Sea with an increasing international presence.

Odfjell Drilling has more than 35 years of international experience of design, ownership and operational management of semi-submersibles, fixed installations, drillships, jack-ups and modular drilling units, established in most parts of the world.

Platform drilling in Odfjell Drilling is centralized towards two major clients in Norway and one in UK with a total of 11 strings. The onshore operations are tuned to experience transfer and simplicity between all operations.

Business Challenge
Platform drilling is recognized as a challenging, low margin operation in the offshore industry. However, there exists a potential to redesign the operational model for this type of operation by utilizing integrated operations; squeezing down costs to improve margins as well as improve operational performance and reduce downtime.

Solution
Based on the challenges identified, Odfjell Drilling’s management established a project to reap the IO benefits on platform drilling for two of our clients. By utilizing achievements in technology (videoconfer-encing/ collaboration rooms and real-time data), the operations model could be optimized through IO based work processes and aligned organization. The main vehicle of the change was to establish the Onshore Support Center (OSC) and staff it with experienced personnel. While improving quality and continuity by strengthening the onshore organization, the overall cost level was reduced by reducing offshore organization.

The OSC concept comprises the following main areas:

  • Day-to-day focus and follow up of Key Performance Indicators
  • Concurrent planning in order to minimize use of rig time for maintenance activities
  • Detailed well planning onshore
  • Proactive maintenance management
  • Systematic experience transfer
  • Collaboration between customer/installation/onshore staff (through the OSC)

Collaboration with Odfjell Drilling Technology (ODT) or other suppliers to coordinate and follow up drilling modification services

The OSC is staffed by a mix of operational personnel, technical personnel and efficiency engineers. The staff coordinates services between installations, focusing on experience transfer and cross-organizational knowledge.

OSC is equipped with:

  • Videoconference
  • Data sharing software
  • Real time data
  • CCTV and UHF
  • RigManager® (Odfjell Drilling Integrated Planning and Reporting system)

The OSC concept creates a virtual collaboration between onshore and offshore, as well as between other geographical locations.

Deliverable
New operational model for platform drilling towards two large clients, complete with Onshore Support Center and redesigned IO based work processes and organization.

Benefits
Benefits from implementing IO and OSC:

- Improved HSE performance;

  • • Reduced number of the categories medical treatments cases (H2) and damages that leads to absence (H1)
  • • The experience transfer and best practice across installations also leads to increased HSE
  • • Reduced offshore visits from 3. parties leading to decreased HSE exposure

- Savings measured to 8-10% compared to traditional model through;

  • Increased operational performance
  • Reduced down time
  • Concurrent planning (maintenance and operations) has minimized the use of rig time for planned maintenance activities
  • Quality improvements in procedures and operational programs

- Reduced manning offshore

- Improvements in solving operational problems and/or maintenance by involving experts from onshore, either from Odfjell Drilling or supplier in IO environments

Conclusion
By implementing a new operation model, Odfjell Drilling has increased its margin in a traditionally low profit operation and demonstrated willingness for its clients to develop and renew the operation, based on IO. It is also reason to believe that the drilling industry is changing due to IO and that this project will help Odfjell Drilling to sustain a competitive advantage in the market.
