Det norske oljeselskap ASA (DETNOR) focuses on exploration and development of petroleum resources on the Norwegian Shelf. Det norske's registered office is located in Trondheim, and headquarter functions are divided between Trondheim and Oslo.
In addition, the company has offices in Harstad and Stavanger. Det norske is the second-largest operating company on the Norwegian Shelf with regards to number of licenses, interests, and operatorships.
Business Challenge In connection with the commencement of drilling operations at Songa Delta and Bredford Dolphin the company did not have a functioning operations room environment set up. There were video conferencing facilities in place; however, they were not in operational use.
Solution
ODT IO consulting was engaged to do a run through of work processes relating to the operations room environment, as well as assist in designing and setting up the optimal and working solution.
Deliverable
Two fully equipped operation rooms in Oslo and Trondheim offices, as well as adequate home conferencing solutions for key personnel were delivered. Another part of the delivery was a run through and description of main work processes for operational geologists and drilling engineers in the operational drilling phase.
Benefits
As of beginning of May 2009 the clients drilling operations have not yet started, but the video conferencing facilities are now in active use within the company. Benefits are currently being realized through reduced travel and increased efficiency of operations planning, and preparing the client for operations, once the drilling operations commences.
Conclusion
Technology is a means to a solution but is not the solution itself. In order to realize desired benefits, the end users must be involved throughout so that their needs are properly understood and met, as well as an understanding and buy-in for the chosen solution are developed. The client had an existing, albeit non-utilized solution in place prior to our involvement. Now Det norske oljeselskap ASA has an optimised solution, which is actually being put to good use.
