    Odfjell Drilling has been awarded a significant contract award with BP for the provision of a new build, semi-submersible drilling unit for use in the UK’s West of Shetland region. The name of the rig will be Deepsea Aberdeen.

    The new unit will be involved in drilling in the Schiehallion and Loyal fields and will form a key part of the Quad 204* development. The full contract, which is subject to approval by the Quad 204 Partnership, will have a fixed duration of 7 years and is due to start in Q4 2014.

    The new state of the art sixth generation rig will be built in South Korea by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).

    Deepsea Aberdeen is of the enhanced GVA7500 harsh environment design and will be a sister rig to the Deepsea Atlantic and Deepsea Stavanger previously delivered from DSME.

    Construction engineering has commenced and keel laying is scheduled for March 2013.


    *The Quad 204 project is a joint venture to re-develop the Schiehallion and Loyal fields, West of Shetland, in the UK. BP is operator and owns 36.3%, with other interests as follows: Shell (36.3%); Hess Ltd (12.90%); Statoil (UK) Ltd (4.84%); OMV (UK) Ltd. (4.84%) and Murphy Petroleum (4.84%).¨

    Deepsea Atlantic is a sixth generation deepwater and harsh environment semisubmersible. This unit, along with its sister rig Deepsea Stavanger, is a state of the art dual derrick, dynamic-positioned unit of enhanced GVA 7500 design.

    Deepsea Atlantic is designed for operations in harsh environments and water depths up to 3000 metres. Full winterization may be provided for improved working conditions in artic environment.

    Deepsea Atlantic is designed for environmental sensitive areas, and the utmost focus has been put on zero discharge, low emissions and electrical solutions to reduce onboard oil volumes and associated pollution risks.

    Deepsea Atlantic is on a long term contract for Statoil.

    The semisubmersible drilling rig Deepsea Bergen is a self propelled semi submersible unit of enhanced Aker H-3.2, commissioned in February 1983 and has since launch operated mainly in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.

    Odfjell Offshore has 71.53% ownership share of Deepsea Bergen.

    Deepsea Bergen is currently on a three year contract with Statoil for development- and exploration drilling in the Halten Nordland area on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). 

    In February 2011, Statoil and Odfjell Drilling signed a new contract for Deepsea Bergen commencing June 2012.

    The drillship incorporates state of the art technology for safe and efficient operations in ultra deep water and complies with international rules and regulations for operations worldwide.

    Odfjell Offshore and Metro Exploration share joint ownership of two state-of-the-art ultra deep water drillships. Odfjell Offshore has a 40% ownership share in the two drillships, Deepsea Metro I & II.

    Deepsea Metro I is  operating for the BG Group in Tanzania.
