Drilling Crew

A brief summary is given below of the general duties and responsibilities that normally come under the respective positions.

Toolpusher
The Toolpusher is the Drilling Contractor's senior representative on board in charge of carrying out the drilling operation, well maintenance, etc. He is responsible for the drill crew and for ensuring that the drilling operation is carried out in a safe and prudent manner in accordance with the directives of the Drilling Supervisor.

Tourpusher
The Tourpusher is usually responsible for the night drilling shift and for ensuring that the drilling operation is carried out in a safe and prudent manner.

Driller
The Driller supervises and is in charge of the work on the drill floor. He is in charge of the practical organising of the drilling operation, subordinate personnel and control/supervision of the drilling equipment. He is responsible for ensuring that the equipment is handled and procedures are followed in accordance with directives given by the Toolpusher/Tourpusher and the Operator's Drilling Supervisor.

Assistant Driller
The Assistant Driller assists the Driller in his work. This is a trainee post for technical and personal development prior to promotion to Driller.

Derrickman
Derrickman works in the derrick during assembly/breakout of the drill string. He also works with surface equipment for circulation and mixing of drilling mud, taking orders from the Driller, Toolpusher and/or Mud Engineer.

Crane Operator
Is responsible for operating the crane and is in charge of deck work. Shall lead, control and assist in all deck work

Roughneck
The Roughneck works on the drill floor and takes orders from the Driller and Toolpusher.
